Your Shining Star

Congratulations, Graduate!
Who are you?
Just twelve short years ago
You were mommy and daddy's pride and joy,
Old enough to be in first grade...
That pig-tailed little girl,
That freckled faced little boy.
Oh, how proud we were of you,
To think we'd come so far.
We couldn't wait to show you off
And say, "This one's reaching for a star."
But in reality, it was mom and dad
Who were doing the reaching -
And with words of praise, coaxing and preaching,
You finally made it to ninth grade.
Now, who are you?
That beautiful girl who walks up the isle,
Steps a little unsure, and with a "Mona Lisa" smile.
That handsome boy, unaccustomed
To the suit in which he's dressed,
But knowing at the same time he is the best.
You realize you're growing up,
But you don't know how fast.
You don't know how quickly those four years can go,
Or how long they can last.
Then one day you're a senior...
Oh, where did the years go so fast?
You are a young man; a young woman now...
And a graduate at last!
And as you stand on that stage so proudly,
In your cap and gown,
You are lost in dreams for the future
And then you look down...
What you see in the face of your parents
Is what you've been waiting for...
A glow of love and pride that says,
"We're proud of you...
You've come so far...
At last you've reached your shining star."
