ONE LIFE ALTERING DAY

It was an ordinary early autumn day -
Got ready for work and was on my way.
There I stood waiting for the next in line,
Everything for the most part was going just fine.

I stepped up to the schedule to see when I could take my break,
And from that moment on, I wish I could say it was all fake.
The first word was that one of the twin towers had been hit
It didn’t seem believable, not one little bit.

Time went by and not a word was said.
Then all of a sudden the talk was about how many were dead.
Now the second of the two towers had been struck.
These words hit with the force of a Mack truck.

I was starting to wonder, starting to fear,
Worrying if these horrible people would terrorize here.
And just when you thought things couldn’t get worse
The towers came crashing down, crumbling to the earth.

And if that wasn’t enough to destroy the American pride,
Another struck the Pentagon; no time for them to hide.
Our entire nation was turned upside down
When one last jet crashed into the ground.

For the heroes aboard this American plane
Refused to let the innocent ones endure any more pain.
And there it was. . .  just an ordinary day
That changed so many lives in such a tremendous way.

For the forces of evil had come into our land
And America as we know it was not so grand
For our buildings had crumbled and our lives had been crushed.
The lives of every citizen had now been touched.

We all felt the pain, the anger and grief.
We all watched on TV with total disbelief.
The "impossibles" and "nevers" had struck us so deep;
Emotions were so torn, our nation could do nothing but weep.

But then, all of America joined together as one;
Every race and every nationality under the sun.
We had to stand strong and defend those we lost.
We will sacrifice our own lives; whatever the cost.

United we stand and fight to be free.
We’re fighting for you, we’re fighting for me.
We’re fighting for those whom have lost the ones that they love.
We’re fighting for the angels that watch silently from above.

We’re fighting for our children so that they may be free
From the hatred and evil that these lands have chosen to be.
So let's continue to be strong and help one another
And treat everyone as though he were your own brother.

The unity, the compassion and lending a helping hand
Are the things we need to keep America our “sacred land”.
